Although Edwarcl Turner was best known for his designs of motorcycle engines rather than car engines, it was he who designed a newV8 for the Daimler Company during the late 1950’s. These very engines fitted in the new Daimler sports cars because during that period, the Daimler Company was struggling financially and not much money was available for investment. Because of that reason, it was decided that Daimler would develop a new sports car and fit this newV8 engine in it. There were two engine sizes being developed, 2.5 liter and 4.5 liter. The engine installed was the 2.5 liters version. The chassis of the car was inspired by theTriumphTR3A sports car and made from fibreglass, a huge departure in body construction for Daimler.
Presented at the New York Motor Show in April 1959, the car was named the Daimler Dart. It was necessary the name to be changed because the Chrysler Corporation already had a Dodge by the same name and complained shrilly. The new name was SP 250. Because of the recession in the United States, Daimler had a very small market for their new sports car. The car was not perfect. There were problems with the early engine and their cooling system, the quality of the fibreglass body. Most of the problems were rectified when Jaguar bought out Daimler in 1960. After that, the SP 250 received little change to its bodywork and to its mechanics. The production of the car stopped in 1968.
